Message: Hi All,

currently we have Oracle databases on 11.2.0.3 running on RHEL6 , we are planning to upgrade the OS to RHEL7. Is it possible to backup the DB 11g on RHEL6 and restore it back on RHEL7?
OS will be upgraded From Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.2 (Santiago) To Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.3 (Maipo),

Message: Hello Pavan

Will you upgrade the OS or will you wipe the server and do a fresh install?

If you upgrade it, you'll only need to relink the ORACLE_HOME after upgrading. This assumes, that you used 64-bit architecture on RHEL6. Otherwise you'll have to reinstall the ORACLE_HOME. Your database files can remain untouched.

If you'll wipe and reinstall the server: Yes, you can restore an RMAN backup created on RHEL6.

Jan

Always the little details. I very briefly thought about this and just thought "10gR2 wasn't, but 11gR2 was certified".

True, but only 11.2.0.4. I fully support Tims recommendation. Without patching to 11.2.0.4: don't do it.

Jan
