Os info: RHEL 5
Oracle info: CRS& ASM on 11gR2 and Database on 10gR2
Message: Hi Guru,

I need some advices from RAC guru.
I'm trying to configure the multiple databases on 2 nodes RAC due to the different application with different db components.
How can I create the second oracle home?

Here is the current information.

OS: RHEL 5 (Linux)
CRS & ASM: 11gR2 (11.2.0.1)
Database : 10gR2(10.2.0.4)

The one database is up and running without any problem each node.
We need to create another database with different oracle home.

Databases: dbrac, oradb (new database)
Node 1: dbrac1 , oradb1 (new instance)
Node 2: dbrac2, oradb2 (new instance)

Currently, there are two users. One is "GRID" for CRS & ASM and the other is "ORACLE" for database.

Here is the questions.

Q1> Do I have to create another user when I create another oracle home like "ORACLE2" ?
I heard that I should use different user for another oracle database in multiple database on RAC. Is it right?

Q2> What is best practice for multiple databases on RAC ? Just one "ORACLE" user or multiple users for multiple databases?

Q3> I couldn't find any document or site for multiple database on RAC configuration. Could you guide me if you have any good information ?

Please shed some light on it.

Thanks in advance.

That is 100% sure not right. You can
1. create multiple RAC databases attached to the same RAC aware Oracle Home ( which i already did many times )
2. create multiple RAC databases each one attached to its own RAC aware Oracle Home but you keep one and only one os software owner ( which is easier from an os user rights point of view )
3. (possible) create multiple RAC databases each one attached to its own RAC aware Oracle Home and the os software owner of each Oracle Home is unique ( which is significantly more complex from an os user rights point of view ) (I admit I haven' t done it so far)

Q2> What is best practice for multiple databases on RAC ? Just one "ORACLE" user or multiple users for multiple databases?

My advice (I refer to my above comment)
only go for 3 : multiple Oracle Homes / multiple os users if you are forced because of security / validation purposes. If you have to choose for this I advice to look further for details about user rights.
go for 2 : if you have to support different (internal) business customers. Customer 1 can require you apply an interim patch (Oracle Home 1). Because we are prudent we do not apply it for customer 2. (Oracle Home 2)
go for 1 : if you are sure your software version is supposed to stay identical for all your RAC databases.
If it would turn out after a year let' s say, you need to setup an addional Oracle Home you still can

Q3> I couldn't find any document or site for multiple database on RAC configuration. Could you guide me if you have any good information ?

I try to find something, however don' t be afraid. the most fragile part is the underlying Oracle Clusterware, the OCR the voting disk, access to the voting disk, cluster interconnect. If that layer is unsain you can forget it. if that layer is stable you can host multiple RAC databases assuming your os processes limits and physical memory allow it.

May others complete

Message: Hi Guy,

Thanks for your suggestion.
I'd better take the option 2.
Currently, there are two users. "Grid" is for OCR & ASM and "Oracle" is for database.

So I don't need to create another oracle OS user for the seperate oracle home. Than I can create multiple Oracle_Home for multiple databases using just one "oracle" OS user. Is it right?

Please confirm this.

Thanks

Message: hi,

You can create as many oracle homes as you want with only one oracle user.

But I suggest to go with one oracle home,on which you create as many databases as you want.

Thanks,
Roy
